missing

Strangely, I'm missing a lot of things back in Melbourne.
It's been just a day since I got back to good ol' Kluang. Nothing much has changed. People are still driving at 40km/hr at their own wills. Haven't noticed any new shops around. Same food, same places. And in that way, I'm actually glad. It was good before, and you don't fix a working machine. As unrealistic and not too healthy as it may be, I actually don't like changes. If things are good, let it be. If things are bad, I'll learn to live with it. No need for changes. Changes are tedious.

But we all known that growth requires change. The world is dynamic. Move on or be left behind.

A few friends are back in town. But not for long. Very soon, I'll be running out of things to do. For some reason, I've been a little lost this trip back. I just turned on my Astro (satellite tv) for the first time today since I got back, and I only watched for 20 minutes. The telly really rots my brain. Nothing good on the movie channels. And MTV and Channel V are playing garbage (no, not the band). And I know some of you are gonna crucify me for this, but I haven't even been mamak-ing that much. No real incentive or urge, really. I'll just go out to catch up with friends.

My mood has been mellow. I think I'm pmsing.

But it's okay. I think I'll try and watch a few movies. And I'll read. I've currently got:
Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell,
The 13½ lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers, and
After Dark by Haruki Murakami.

I'll finish them before I go back.

I should sleep now. Church is at 8:30a.m.
I'm home again.

beautiful

Tonight felt that way.
Didn't do much today. Went out only for dinner. Slept in through breakfast. Mum bought back some chicken rice (love it when they wrap it up with brown paper) for lunch, so I only went out for dinner with the family and Uncle Jack (of the Kluang Station) and Aunty Linda. On the drive home, I caught a glimpse of the moon. The sky was dark because it was cloudy. Yet the moon, being full and bright, somehow shone through somewhere behind a hill. It looked like a spotlight hidden by a mist. And I thought it was beautiful.

I finished a book today. That's one down and two more to go.
Then in the afternoon, I finally watched Freedom Writers, after everyone telling me how good it is. And I agree. 'Inspirational' movies like that usually make me icky. Especially Russell Crowe ones. But this one was good. I actually found it very convincing. And to a certain degree, I even related.

Went through some of my old stuff after the movie. Looked through some of the old books that I have. Old photos. Toys. Gifts and little notes. I even found some old notes I used to make for my exams - How to memorise the chemicals from the periodic table.
Some purely embarrassing. Others are treasure.

"hi hello. little betty buys coconut oil for nevin. naughty maggie always sing pop songs clearly. kacang."

Haha!! "kacang". And still, I get a C.

There's just something about old books though that I can't quite put a finger on. They're simply beautiful. I found an ancient copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Used to belong to my dad. I found it on his bookshelf when I was in primary school, back at his hometown one holiday. Decided to take it back. Funnily enough, I never actually got around to reading it. I still haven't. I just liked the way it looked.

I still don't think I'll read it.

I'm going to Sabah next week. Kota Kinabalu, for a couple of days.
Yay for a change of scene.

godmail

So I was checking my e-mail today, when I noticed a message set-apart from the rest:

God loves me so much.

goodbyes

So, this will probably be my last stay here in KL for a long time. Well, in Mont Kiara, at least.
The apartment is finally going to be leased out as of next week. The pace of it all was so quick. Got a call from the agent and the deal was done in about a day. There goes my bunk in KL. It's back to crashing classmates' again, I imagine in the future.

I also won't be getting my lomo lc-a+ back, which is a major letdown. If you remember (or even know about it in the first place), the plastic camera was giving me problems sometime about 3 months ago. So I had it sent back to Malaysia to be fixed as the warranty still applies. Now, two months on since it was first brought in for repairs, it's still not fixed. Although they're offering to mail it back to me in Melbourne once that's done, it sounds a little dodgy. So there goes my lomo. I'm picking up the refund tomorrow.
My heart aches.

Being here in KL feels a little better. Although I'm not necessarily doing more than in Kluang, it somehow feels like I can breathe better. (Maybe it's the 16th floor). There's more freedom. More options. I can't wait for Sunday at CCKL.

As of today, Esther and I have been together for three years.
A long and windy journey it has been.
I still wish I were back there instead. Just... for now.

sunday

It rained today.

That's when I knew the day was gonna be good.

Visited CCKL today. Was real good seeing familiar faces again. People like Jezza, Ray, Skye and Maureen, for instance, whom I haven't met in a while. Familiarity seeped in. It felt really good; as though with family again.
Silas was sweating in the Malaysian heat. It was the most unusual sight. As usual, he had something to say about what I was wearing. But it was good to see him again too. And who could forget Sarah Joy? It's always a delight to see her smile (both in noun and verb).

Mark's message on Daniel was timely for me. Learn the language, abstain from the diet - the life I'm learning to live in this world at the moment. The life of an interpreter; interpreting God's language into the secular world around me, yet not feeding off the same diet it has to offer. A fine line drawn.

After church we decided spontaneously to go by faith, without tickets, to IMAX to watch Transformers (again). The movie was at 9, but we got there at about 8:40. By the time we got to the booth, the only seats remaining for us was on the first row. Well, that and the VIP seats up the back, that is, which was exclusive to God-knows-who. Sitting on the first row in an IMAX cinema would be suicide. So I pretty much gave up on the spot.
Thankfully, Sarah Joy didn't. Apparently she had been praying all week so we could watch the movie again together. Haha! Cute, I know. But she persevered. Hence, the VIP seats suddenly became ours!

There is nothing quite like watching Transformers on the IMAX.
Pure indulgence, I tell you.

Anyway, the movie ended at about 11:45, but I only got home about 2 hours later. Silly Silas is horrible with Malaysian roads. He doesn't even know the roads around his own neighbourhood. I only had to drop two people off, being him and another girl named Timmie.
I nearly ended up on the highway to Genting.

Arriving home at 1:30ish, I got hungry. So I went back out with dad to mamak for a quick meal.

I love days like this.
It should rain more.

July 10, 2007

here and there

I'm back in Kluang again.
The weekend passed by so fast. The drive down yesterday even faster. I fell asleep in the car and the next thing I knew, I was back home already. But just for the night though.

Tonight, I'll be dining at Kota Kinabalu. I can't wait.
Night markets. Beach. Seafood. Sunsets. Islands. Tropic. For three days, two nights.
It'll be fast. But I think I'll love it.

p/s: two books down. one more to go.

kay kay

So I'm back from the land below the wind.

Landing at the airport, it was raining heavily. The forecast, which I learnt later turned out to be accurate, predicted showers for the following days. Beach life and sunsets were ruled out in an instant.
The drive to the hotel in the cab was refreshing. Although the hotel was a mere 10 minutes away, we passed by much of the town to get there. A lot has changed since the last time I went seven years ago. Passed by Sutera Harbour. I miss it much. A lot of memories there (remember, sho? syikin?). Then there was the Phillipino Markets as well. They look the same, except that it was nighttime now. I have only been there during the day. A new shopping centre called the Warisan Square is right across the road from it. Interesting concept. It's a shopping centre; but it's comprised of inter-joint blocks of shoplots. Not many shops opened yet. Could get good.

After dinner, I'd take a walk outside the hotel by myself. The first night, I walked around the city centre. The streets are quieter than I expected. I found one nightclub. And it was empty, with duff-duff playing so loud you can feel the vibrations on the outer thin walls. Just pubs and bistros, mainly - standing out thanks to their awkward locations. KK feels a bit like Ipoh. Most of the buildings are old. So when you see neon lights and modern deco in the midst of all the other old-looking shoplots on the same block, it feels a little out of place. Oh, and singers singing songs from the 80's like hotel bar entertainers? They're everywhere.
I found one mamak too.

On Day 2, dad rented a car and we drove up to the highlands. Impressively, he still remembers the roads quite well (we used to frequent to kk a bit, when we were still living in sabah almost 2 decades ago). We headed up to Kundasang and journeyed on a little till Poring's Hot Springs. Up the way, the scenery was beautiful. Could've been better due to the weather - Mt Kinabalu was constantly blanketed with clouds - but still, amazing.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I noticed there were many churches up the mountains. Mostly Catholic and Seventh Day Adventists. But there were many. Like mushrooms.
Dogs too. Suicidal ones. They walk and sleep by the side of the roads so close to where our wheels would tread as if the existence of road vehicles were of another invisible dimension. Sometimes you'd wonder if that dog lying on the road was roadkill or merely sleeping.

At Kundasang, we dropped by the Kundasang market. We used to buy our groceries here last time (as we lived in an estate, deep inside the jungles). We also headed up to a hotel we would have stayed at then, just to visit. I remember it so clearly. It was (and still is) minty green. Hotel Perkasa Kota Kinabalu isn't very well received these days apparently (looking at the colour scheme, you wonder why). Apparently, a rather famous murder case involving a female minister occurred in the hotel, and ever since then, some people believe it's haunted. Driving up there, I was suddenly reminded of The Shining, minus the snow.

It was creepy inside.

We proceeded later to the Hot Springs at Poring. Dad and I climbed up over 100m to a Canopy Walk there as thin as a plank. Mum and grandma didn't make it a third way through, so they waited at the foot. The scenery wasn't that impressive. But the climb was memorable. We were hanging at over 40m above ground level.

When we got back to the city, it was dinnertime. So we had some seafood by the beach.

Again, after dinner, I went for a walk outside the hotel by myself. This time, I decided to hit the beach, which the first proper one I could find was about 2km from the hotel. But it was well worth it. The waves were strong, hitting the rocks hard and breaking into pieces of foam. A lone boat would chug along under the moonless sky almost secretly from time to time. A few locals were fishing along the coast ignoring the flashes from my camera.
The night was mine.

On Day 3 it rained the whole day. Ruined a lot of the plans as we were pretty much just meant to explore the nearing beaches. We went hotel-hopping as most beaches (or at least the prettier ones) were secured by 5-star resorts. From Tanjung Aru's Shangri-La, to Nexus Karambunai (sp?), to Sutera Harbour in the evening. The clouds stole the sunset away. What a disappointment.

After dinner at the harbour, we left for the airport to catch our flight home.
I liked the getaway very much. But at the same time, I'm glad I was heading home too. After all, I ran out of space in my camera and I didn't bring my laptop along.

Now, for kl again next week...

July 18, 2007

soon,

I'll be back in KL. And before I know it, Melbourne again.
I'm heading back up to KL tomorrow morning. (Sorta) good news. The leasing of the apartment is delayed a week, till the very day I fly off back to Melbourne. Timing is good. It's tight, however. I can think of so many things to do and people to meet within the short span of time spent there, nearing the weekend. Technically, I only have about 2 days to do some last minute shopping, meet at least 4 different groups of people, and pack all things up to be ready to fly on Friday night.

These last few days back in Kluang has been a bit hectic as well. Well, not 'hectic' per se. But definitely full. Some people are back. Some mamak-ing is involved. 5 meals per day. With favours and errands to run in between as well. It's been keeping me busy enough to put my last book aside for the past three days. Looks like I might not finish all three books before I go back after all. Which is a good sign, in a way.

The weather has been funny too. Consistently for the past three days, it has been hot as Hades during the day,

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

but raining heavily in the evening and at night.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Some parts of Kluang were even flooded last night in a matter of one hour's of downpour.
Didn't stop a few of us from mamaking though.

Catching up with some of the people around have been good. People like Tien Ern, Eunice, Ly, Ryan, Isaac, and Lee Yen. Individually as well as as a group. As Ryan put it last night, it's been a while since we've laughed so hard. And it's true. I find that I don't laugh as hard anywhere else; with anyone else. It's not a matter of preference of company. It's a different environment altogether. And this, for now, is good.

As dreadful as a lot of this holiday has been, I think I'll miss this place quite a bit. I foresee this to be the last time I'll be back here in a while. Kluang, as slow as it is, is still home; with the people still around with it (well, some, at least). Mamaks with huge projectors and plasma screens showing wrestling and football. The lousy ones screen Akademi Fantasia.
Oh, and the great kopitiam food too, of course.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Kluang Station (as in the commercialised chain version, as per the ones in 1Utama and The Curve) actually just opened in Kluang as well. So now, technically, there are two Kluang Station coffee shops. The original one at the railway station, and another air-conditioned one in the town. It's weird. But good stuff still. Now you can have kopitiam food all day, plus more.

Anyway, I should go. It's almost 2am now. I need to get up early to settle my re-enrolment in uni before I head up to KL.
The holiday's coming to an end.

Yay?

July 20, 2007

last day

Today's been good. Exhausting, but good. And I know it's really good when despite lugging my camera around with me all day meeting people, I didn't actually took a single shot with them. It's just that good a time spent talking and catching up, that even the craving to go shutterhappy could be pushed aside that I'd forget all about it.

Despite being sick as well (crap, I know), I have been able to soldier through the day from 10am right till midnight, stopping only for half an hour of break. And yet, I'm sorry to say I still wasn't able to pack everything up today to meet with everyone. A little bit of shopping (necessities only), and then it was purely meeting with people.

1pm lunch with Yvonne till 2pm.
2pm coffee with Silas till 3:30pm.
Headed home. Rested.
Left for Subang at almost 5:00pm for tea with Rachel (Finally met. Yay).
8:30 dinner with Gary, Tien Ern, and Jia Wei. Followed by drinks again.

I've decided that I don't want to talk to Gary anymore though. Well, not in a very long time, that is. He revealed the ending to the latest Harry Potter book which has been leaked online to us over dinner tonight. I punched him in the thigh a couple of times. I think he deserves more. But the Christian in me decided not to. Mercy. Grace.
Next time, maybe I'll put the angel on my right shoulder on 'silent mode', when I meet him again.
Not that I'm much of a Harry Potter fan. I don't read the books. I just watch the movies. But no ending, especially to a long running series like this, should be revealed to unwilling ears.
*Grumbles...

The three weeks here ended up being busier than I thought.
I'm glad I'm going back, though, this time round. It's weird. Maybe the cold's beckoning. I miss Melbourne. Yet, there are futures there I'm still not sure I know how to face when I go back this time round. A new semester is ahead. More changes are to come.
I still don't quite know what I want.

Till we meet again, all ye Malaysian dwellers (including you now, Silas). Take care, and God bless.

dah balik

I'm back in cold weather.
The flight was horrible. It was delayed for more than an hour. The flight was overbooked so they switched the gates at KLIA three times, and changed the planes as well to a bigger one. Fortunately, the Boeing 747-400 flies faster too.

I'm still living in Malaysian timezone. With that to add, late-night Malaysian timezone. Last night a couple of us headed out for supper at one. I got home at three-ish and slept at four-ish.
Tonight I should try to sleep earlier.
It's two now...

Anyway, the weather has been great. I love the cold. Two degrees dawn is beautiful. And in the afternoon today, at 17 degrees, the sun was even out.
Perfect.

.......................................

I was greeted with love when I got back.

Now all I need is film...

Randomness: I love my new socks from Topman.

There we go. Got that out of the way. I should sleep now.
Goodnight, world.

"love"

I think i say it too much, that I'm beginning to discount the word itself. Like how much I love my socks.

And so the end of my first week of uni has come to an end. It is tiring, despite the lesser hours. For those who aren't aware, I have actually decided to underload this semester. Remember how I failed a subject two semesters back? Instead of doing a unit over this coming summer (so, it would have been 4 units this sem + 1 unit in summer, then graduate), I've decided to underload this semester by doing 3 subjects only, and 2 the next semester. By freeing up my summer, I graduate 4 months later than originally planned. In the mean time, I hope to get a casual or part-time job (which I'm currently looking around for) and perhaps in summer, even an internship at an accounting firm.

In the mean time, I get Mondays and Tuesdays off. That's a four-day weekend. It's awesome, I tell you.

~

Life has been a bit of a wild ride for the past few weeks. It can be great. But at the same time, it could be the worst point in a long time that I've been at as well. There has been a few issues in my priorities and relationships I've been facing and trying to make sense of as of lately; and now, I feel that the end of this chapter is drawing near to an end. How do I conclude and answer these questions, I'm still not too sure of. But I know for sure that I need to trust God that He knows what's best for me. In the mean time, won't you pray and hope along with me for the best.

~

Rachel just sent me a link today to a photographer's portfolio. His name is John Paul Jespersen, and he's amazing with nighttime, long (and I mean very long) exposure shots.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

So beautiful.

~

I still need film. Will someone from Malaysia mail me some 120 film please? And at the same time, maybe an original Mukhsin VCD/DVD? It's not that expensive, I think. And I don't know if this is even out yet, but maybe Tsai Ming Lai's I Don't Want to Sleep Alone DVD as well? I'm beginning to really admire Malaysia's indie films like these two. Sepet is a winner without a doubt. But these two here, I've heard a lot about as well, and I want to watch.
Daddy? Mummy? Mail-mail? Hehe...

~

My mind is scattered all over.
